The newly inducted chief judge of the Zik Hall judicial council has stated that the judicial council needs the backing of a higher authority in order for it to perform its roles effectively.
He stated this in an interview, prior to his ratification as chief judge of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall judicial council.
When asked what he thinks could be a possible solution to the flagrant defiance of the decisions of the judicial council, such as refusal to honour summons by the council or pay fines imposed by the court on those who are found guilty of one offence or the other, the former attorney general of the hall, Tomilayo Oyedeji, stated that one way to revive the deserved reverence of the council's decision over matters brought before it is to ensure the endorsement of the council by higher authorities like the hall's porters.
He also emphasised the need for enlightenment of Zikites on the importance of the judiciary as the third arm of government in any democratic society.
“The authority of the judicial council is crucial for the upholding of the principles of democracy,” he said.
