Students of the University of Ibadan (UI) are set to embark on a peaceful demonstration tomorrow over an 80-day blackout affecting Alexander Brown Hall and Ayodele Falase Postgraduate Hall at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
This was contained in a notice issued by the Students’ Union President, Aweda Bolaji, and the General Secretary, Ogundijo Dolapo Japheth, on Sunday. According to the union leaders, the protest follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government to address the situation.
The demonstration, which is scheduled to start at 7 a.m., will commence from the UCH main gate and proceed to the Secretariat.
The union described the blackout as a violation of students’ rights to decent living conditions, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention by the government.
“We can no longer remain silent while our fellow students are subjected to such deplorable conditions,” the statement read.
"This peaceful protest is a call for justice and equity. We urge every Uite to join us as we march for change.”
Students have been urged to turn up in black tops as a mark of solidarity with their colleagues who have endured weeks of hardship due to the prolonged power outage.
