The Law Students Society, University of Ibadan has on Friday, 3rd of January, 2025 issued an apology letter to the members of the Kegites Club for the "unintended misrepresentation" of the club.
In the letter signed by the association's president, Idowu Ademola, the Law Students Society expressed their "deepest respect and admiration for the Kegites Club of Nigeria, its mission, values, and contributions to the University of Ibadan community and beyond."
"It has come to our attention through your release dated 11th December 2024, titled “Rejoinder to the Law Students Society (LSS): Setting the Record Straight,” that certain statements and publications from our Ethics and Litigation Department might have been perceived as misrepresenting your club."
The statement then revealed that the intention was never to denigrate or misrepresent the esteemed Kegites Club of Nigeria. Instead, the publication in question sought to educate law students on adherence to the LSS Code of Conduct, specifically Part A, Rule 4 of the 2024 (as amended) Code, which discourages activities that promote alcohol consumption, including drinking
competition and that the example involving the Kegites club was cited purely to provide context and emphasis, not to impugn her values or reputation."
"Furthermore, we wish to address the request for the removal of a purported unconstitutional provision within the LSS Constitution that allegedly restricts law students from joining your club or any other association. Upon review, we wish to categorically state that no such provision exists in the LSS Constitution. The relevant provision merely advises law students to refrain from participating in drinking contests or activities that promote alcohol consumption, consistent with ethical and professional standards expected of future legal practitioners,"the statement further revealed.
"We appreciate the opportunity to clarify this misunderstanding and reaffirm that the LSS Constitution does not, in any way, restrict membership in your club or any association within the university. Our guiding principles remain respect for individual freedom and alignment with university regulations."
"In light of this, we tender an apology for any unintended misrepresentation and assure you of our commitment to fostering mutual respect, understanding, and constructive dialogue between our organizations. We value the role the Kegites Club plays in enriching student life and cultural expression, and we look forward to collaborative opportunities that enhance these shared goals, " the statement continued.
"To this end, we propose an open dialogue or meeting to further strengthen the relationship between our organizations and to ensure any future publications reflect our mutual respect and understanding," the statement concluded.
It should be noted that the Kegites Club of Nigeria had on Friday, 6th of December, 2024 demanded a public retraction of the defamatory statements made against the Kegites Club by the Ethics and Litigations department of the LSS, a formal apology acknowledging the inaccuracies in their publications and the removal of any unconstitutional provisions within the LSS constitution that infringe upon the rights of members of the Kegites Club of Nigeria or other associations.
