The University of Ibadan Students’ Union Representative Council (SRC) convened on Friday, December 6, 2024, for its second emergency sitting to review the proposed budget for the upcoming Students’ Union Week.

The session, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Opegbemi Matthias Busoye, review the budget proposals submitted by the Vice President and the Financial Committee.

The Vice President’s proposal, amounting to ₦17,599,987.50, allocated significant funds for publicity and auxiliary items.

However, the Financial Committee, chaired by Hon. Wareez Olosho K., reviewed the proposal and presented a revised budget of ₦11,647,072.50. The committee’s adjustments included reduced allocations for publicity and miscellaneous expenses, while prioritizing core activities.

The difference of ₦5,952,915 between the original and revised budgets was not a subject of contention during the sitting, as council members focused solely on reviewing the breakdown of the Financial Committee’s figures.

Students’ Union President, Aweda Bolaji, speaking during the session, urged the SRC to adopt a pragmatic approach to budget reviews. He cautioned against overly aggressive cuts, which he said could undermine the Union’s ability to deliver a successful and memorable Union Week.

While we appreciate the need for prudence, the SRC must be realistic in its approach to reducing the budget. Excessive cuts risk undermining the Union’s ability to organize a successful and memorable Union Week,” Bolaji said.

The session concluded with the budget remaining under review, pending further deliberations and final approval.
