The University of Ibadan has emerged as the overall winner of the 7th edition of the Super Bowl oratory competition. The event, which was held on Friday, 20th of December, 2024, at the Dame Edith Okowa Hall at the University of Ibadan’s Alumni Centre, had in attendance thirteen other tertiary institutions across Oyo state.
This edition of the Super Bowl was organized in conjunction with the Student Affairs of Oyo State and themed “This is Nigeria.”
The schools in attendance were the University of Ibadan, Lead City University, Abiola Ajimobi University, Federal School of Surveying, Ladoke Akintola University, Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora, Ajayi Crowther University, Atiba University, Dominican University, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Federal College of Forestry, Federal Cooperative College, and Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Ibadan.
The best female speaker was Nwachukwu Jacinta from Dominican University, while the best male speaker was Chineke Ugochukwu from the University of Ibadan. The first overall was University of Ibadan’s Chimeke Ugochukwu, while the second position was Dominican University's Nwachukwu Jacinta, and the third position was Abiola Ajimobi Technical University's Kolade Daniella. Each of them received a cash prize of two hundred thousand, one hundred and fifty thousand and one hundred thousand naira respectively.
Popular investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo delivered a keynote address also on the theme. He spoke on Nigeria and the rot in the Nigerian government in which he described the paradoxical situation of Nigeria, where the institutions created to fight against crimes are the ones perpetuating it.
The competition had three rounds. In the first round, each contestant delivered a prepared speech pitching Nigeria to prospective investors. The second round of the contest had a Pix-Prompter, in which the contestants were expected to give an extemporaneous short speech on an impromptu picture shown to them, while the third round had all the contestants speaking impromptu on the topic: “My Hero.”
While expressing his appreciation, the convener, Dr. Bisi Olawuyi, promised that the next edition will be bigger and better.
