Lately, the issue of smoking and drug use received little to no attention from the Hall Management let alone the indifference and the coldness of the Hall's defense team which is below zero centigrade towards the matter. The excos' attention deficit and the defense team's negligence has given smokers and drug addicts in the hall field days to puff and sniff.
Last semester, the shout of 'shout Jesus' erupted from the lips of a 300 level student who just had a session of drugs with his colleagues at the topmost floor of Block D. After drawing the attention of the Hall Management and executives, the student was evicted but returned after a week rendering the Hall management's order moot under the roof of Chief Justice who charged residents washing beside tanks but drug addicts enjoy free rein to indulge without fear of consequence.
Though, the topmost floor of Block D now seems like a usual hideout and hotspot for smokers but this act is being exercised at almost all the blocks in Hall. At press time, Cigarette butts, lighter, and other smoking materials were found in some Kitchenettes in Block B, Smokers now find refuge in these spaces, leaving behind trails of smoke.
Smoking is now a prevalent issue in the hall. Some Zikites find repose in places like topmost floor of Block D to puff. The whorls of smoke emanating from these spaces disturb residents. Sometime last semester, “Issues Affecting Zik Hall,” a WhatsApp group for Zikites, was in the eye of the storm. Some students accused residents of alumni block of smoking. However, the matter was laid to rest.
As smokers now have field days in the hall, the executives would do well to ensure this menace is nipped in the bud. The seeds of smoking and drug use must be destroyed before they grow into monstrous monsters.
Also, the defense committee has a critical role in ensuring this monstrosity is curbed. It's high time they do more on security to ensure the hall doesn't become a breeding space for smokers to breathe.
