Residents of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall gathered at B-block basement on Saturday, November 9, 2024 for a congress to address pressing issues impacting their daily lives and to explore potential solutions for improvement.
The congress, marked by a reasonable turnout, began with students openly voicing concerns such as inconsistent water supply, frequent electricity outages, and the deteriorating state of restroom facilities.
These discussions underscored the need for action to address the
various infrastructure problems affecting the quality of life in the hall. The
hall chairman, Fabiyi Oluwadamilare Caleb mostly recognized as Fadaca took to the podium to provide a
comprehensive 'State of the Hall' address, directly acknowledging these
challenges. He attributed many of the hall's infrastructural and operational
difficulties to funding shortages, which he identified as a primary obstacle
in efforts toward renovation and improvement. He explained that financial constraints have impeded progress on much-needed redevelopment projects, he solicited patience and collaboration as the hall seeks
sustainable solutions.
In a gesture of respect and remembrance, the chairman also announced plans to rename the Junior Common Room as the "Prof. Ajewole Opeyemi Junior Common Room" in honor of the late Professor Ajewole ‘Iroko’ Opeyemi, a former hall chairman and warden of the hall. This move, he explained, is intended to immortalize Prof. Iroko’s contributions to the hall.
Fadaca continued by unveiling plans to introduce new committees aimed at enhancing hall operations and student development. Among these are the Innovation and Digital Skills Committee, which would focus on imparting essential soft skills to residents, and a Sanitation Committee, under the vice hall chairman's guidance, specifically tasked with overseeing restroom cleanliness and maintenance. Additionally, a Committee for Partnerships and Cooperation will be formed to facilitate connections that will bring in resources, and support the hall’s projects.
Recognizing the importance of leadership, the hall chairman introduced a forward-thinking plan for a new leadership training program. "This initiative will be designed to prepare aspiring student politicians across different faculties and departments with essential skills and ethics for effective governance" he elaborated.
Addressing social issues, he addressed the topic of sexual harassment within the hall, urging residents to refrain from inappropriate remarks, gestures or actions toward visitors and passersby. He emphasized the importance of maintaining respect and decorum as part of the hall’s core ethics and standards, reinforcing a commitment to a safe and respectful environment for all.
In closing, the hall chairman announced an upcoming “six-in-one” event set for tomorrow, promising a vibrant array of activities, including a traditional gyration, a common pot, sports competitions, and other festivities designed to foster community spirit and engagement.
With this proactive
congress, Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall is setting a positive course toward meaningful
change. Zikites expressed renewed optimism that these initiatives will drive
lasting improvements in hall administration, enhance student well-being, and
enrich the hall community for years to come.
