The University of Ibadan Students’ Union, a body Uites traditionally see as the mouthpiece of the student populace, is currently facing accusations of stifling democratic processes. The union has come under fire for its decision to indefinitely postpone a scheduled Congress, a platform crucial for students to air grievances and propose solutions.
In accordance with the union’s constitution, a group of students, backed by the required number of signatories, formally requested a Congress. This legitimate demand, constitutionally backed, was acknowledged by the union on July 25th. However, instead of progressing with the necessary arrangements, the union opted for a blanket postponement, citing the volatile national situation as the reason. While it is understandable that national unrest can disrupt normal activities, the reality on the ground at the University of Ibadan paints a different picture. Academic activities are going on smoothly, classes are holding, SEALS Cup and Zik league have hetch-free motion. This raises questions about the sincerity of the union’s claim that the current climate precludes holding a Congress. The Congress is more than just a meeting; it is a democratic space where students can hold their representatives accountable, propose policies, and address pressing issues. By indefinitely postponing this Congress, the union is effectively silencing the student body.
The question that begs an answer is: Why is the union so reluctant to hold a Congress? Is it fear of accountability? Is it an attempt to maintain the status quo? Or is it simply incompetence? Whatever the reason, the actions of the union are a clear betrayal of the trust placed in them by the students they are meant to represent.
It is imperative that the union reconsiders its position and immediately schedules the Congress as demanded by the students. A vibrant and engaged student body is essential for the growth and development of any institution, and the University of Ibadan is no exception. The union must not be an obstacle to this progress. Uites deserve better.They deserve a union that listens, that is responsive, and that upholds the principles of democracy. The time for excuses is over.
