University of Ibadan students have accused the UI’SU leadership of misrepresenting the resolutions from the Congress held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, and have petitioned for corrective action.
The petition, addressed to both the Students’ Union Executive Council and the Students’ Representative Council, was signed by six students: Aduwo Ayodele, Nice Linus, Olamide Gbadegesin, Michael Awoyemi, Adewumi Damilare, and Bolaji Eiyeke.
Entitled “Petition Against The Disrespect And Falsification Of Congress Resolutions By The UI’SU Executive Council,” the document criticizes the Union President for leaving the Congress without a formal adjournment and for disregarding Congress decisions related to the ‘suspension of the fee portal.’
The petition states, “We, the undersigned students of the University of Ibadan, are writing to protest the UI’SU leadership's severe disrespect by walking out of the Congress without formally adjourning the session, as well as for falsifying the resolutions from the Congress held on August 17, 2024.”
The petition further notes that during the Congress, students raised concerns about various forms of coercion to pay fees before exams and registrations, contrary to the management's promise to review the fee increase. Uites were dismayed to find that the resolutions released by the Union did not reflect what had been discussed, which the President had publicly acknowledged before leaving.
The students have demanded that the resolutions be corrected within a 5-hour deadline from the receipt of the petition.
“We firmly request a correction of this error within 5 hours of receiving this petition. We trust that the Students’ Union leadership will honor the Congress's decisions,” the petition concludes.
