Aroism has met public criticism as it is transcending the real intention of creating humorous and peaceful atmosphere.
Aroism is generally known as a practice of creating a humorous atmosphere, passing impressive and satirical commentary. It's believed to have originated from Nnamdi Azikwe Hall which is apparently the most popular University of Ibadan campus, partly as a result of sincere and energetic commitment to Aroism.
It also exists among other halls on campus. They include halls like Obafemi Awolowo Hall. Being a practice that relieves students of their class stress, Aroism is practised in other institutions like Obafemi Awolowo University.
In an interview with Paulo, a Zikite, he said "Aroism has always been a tradition that is common in University halls of residence including the Female and Male hostels. Its main intention is to catch fun after the long day in class. It also serves the purpose of check and balances in the sense that students comment on another student's dressing jokingly though the main intention is to open his or her eyes to where the maladjustment or poor fashion sense lies. It also creates a room to meet new friends thus entrenching the spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood among students."
Another Zikite, Inspiration, said, "Aroism is seen as a medium to comment on the beauty of ladies or any student, it is also seen as a way of having a sense of high esteem,social integration”
Over the years, Zikism and Aroism have been inseparable. They are considered as sacrosanct traditions whose flags must always remain hoisted. However, Zikism Aroism has receive huge criticisms from far and wide especially female hostels that the current Aroers have now made the practice a device that is used to promote chauvanism, misogyny and so on.
“When the essence of a thing is not known, Abuse is then ineluctable." It is said. Painful it is that Zikites now turn Aroism to chauvinism and misogny, probably as a result of their cluelessness and misunderstanding of Aroism. These students are obviously doing this for doing sake while they lack the main intention and reason of this tradition which has been existing for so long. One can say these people lack proper orientation and understanding about Aroism which if care is not taken can make the already hall infamous.
Thus, as it has been said, if truly Zikism sees solace, self esteem,check and balance and entertainment in their so-called Aroism, proper Aroism Orientation Committee should be tabled so as to educate the members of the hall what the Aroistic practice is all about.
Time and day should also be scheduled for the chanting of Aroism as its daily can be so tiring and phlegmatic among members, the time of this Practice should also be drafted in order to maintain perfect tranquility while others are asleep or busy with academic activities.
Besides, congress should also be held in order to discuss the real reason behind the existence of Aroism and how it can foster brotherhood, peaceful atmosphere mixed with humorous mood rather than badmouthing and immoral comments on the passers by.
