There's a saying that goes, "If a river forgets its source, it will run dry." To prevent this, measures must be taken to ensure the river remains connected to its origin. Following the Zik baptism celebration on Saturday, July 13, there have been murmurs regarding its significance. Some view it as fetishistic, promoting cultism and occult initiation, while others see it as mere school tradition.
In Christianity, where baptism originated, it symbolizes admission to the church through water pouring, sprinkling, or immersion. Similarly, in Zikhall, it marks a student's entry into the hall, fostering camaraderie and brotherhood among members.
Certain groups within the hall discourage participation in the baptism, citing religious beliefs and concerns that it could lead freshmen astray. However, one questions whether this perception holds true.
The Zikhall baptism is a longstanding tradition of Zikism at the University of Ibadan, welcoming freshmen into the hall and fostering the spirit of Zikism, which emphasizes brotherhood and unity among members. It's disconcerting to see those familiar with the tradition misrepresenting it.
Today, many Africans dismiss their traditions in favor of new faiths, influenced by a belief that traditional practices are inherently occult or dark. This mindset perpetuates a Eurocentric bias that African traditions needed European intervention to be enlightened—a view criticized by scholars like Hugh Trevor-Roper. While not all traditions are benign, discernment is needed.
Reservations about practices are valid, but they shouldn't sow division. Contrary to misconceptions, the Zik hall baptism isn't an occult initiation but a ritual promoting unity and camaraderie among members. Freshmen are free to participate or abstain.
To the new freshmen participating, welcome to the community. Remember, true Zikism isn't about cultism but about fostering a strong sense of unity and brotherhood within the hall.
