Mellanby hall freshmen have defeated the young Baluba Lions on penalties 5-4 to win the inter-hall freshers competition at the SUB pitch on the 12th, of July 2024.
The two teams who had previously faced off in the group stage.
The first half of play included everything but goals, from tackles to fan chants to cards, not to mention crucial interceptions and tactical involvement from both managers on the sidelines.
The biggest chance of the game fell into the hands of Zik Hall number 10, who smashed his effort wide and a whisker away from the goalpost after being passed through on goal.The second half was more tense as both teams displayed a sense of urgency and intensity desperate for the opener. Late in the first half through a set piece opportunity, the Mellanby skipper drove in a low dangerous freekick, but the Baluba Lions goalkeeper proved equal to the task, tipping the shot over the bar and producing a remarkable save.
Despite both teams throwing in the kitchen sink, they set into the game matching each other grit for grit and tactics for tactics. Both teams displayed resilience as they settled for a stalemate with penalties the ultimate decider. Tayo the mellanby center back scored the winner as the mellanbites swept all of their penalties to win the shootout 5-4 after a 0-0 draw at full time.
Mellanby converted its first four penalties and Tayo won the game with the fifth, blasting his shot into the top corner to seal the win and clinch the trophy for Kenneth Mellanby Hall.
