In a bid to reclaim communal spaces meant for student use, residents of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall of residence, Zikites petitioned the hall management. The focus of their grievance lies in the commercialization of the Junior Common Room (JCR) and Senior Common Room (SCR), spaces historically reserved for student socialization and relaxation.
The petition, initiated recently and now signed by over 500 Zikites as at yesterday, July 18, underscores the dissatisfaction among Zikites regarding the current utilization of these common rooms. "We, residents of this great Hall, are writing to formally petition for the reclamation of the JCR and SCR for the exclusive use of students," the petition reads. It further emphasizes the historical importance of these spaces in fostering student well-being through social interaction.
The crux of the issue appears to be the transformation of these areas into commercial hubs, a trend perceived by many Zikites as detrimental to Baluba’s cohesion. "In recent times, we have watched helplessly as these rooms are being used for purposes that are not aligned with the interests of students," the petition states, reflecting widespread sentiment among the Zikites.
Moreover, the petition includes a clear demand for action: "We, the good residents of the great Nnamdi Azikwe Hall, humbly request evacuation of business and occupants of the common rooms within the next 14 days."
Voices from the Zikites
In gathering broader perspectives, Zikpress spoke with several residents to gauge their stance on the issue. While opinions varied, the underlying concern for reclaiming student-centric spaces was consistent.
An anonymous resident lamented, "We have had situations where Zikites would want to use the JCR and the SCR but won't be able to due to it being used for commercial purposes."
Conversely, Israel Olugbode, a Zoology student, expressed support for the commercial use, arguing it could financially benefit the hall. "Commercializing the JCR can generate revenue for hall activities," he explained, suggesting a pragmatic approach to managing communal spaces.
Another Zikites speaking on the condition of anonymity said “give what belongs to Caesars to Caesars, we’re tired of begging to use the common rooms”
However, not all Zikites are in agreement with the petition's objectives. Another anonymous final year student dismissed the need for such actions, stating, "The JCR has always been commercialized during my tenure, so I don't see the need for the petition."
Hall Management's Response
As of press time, hall management has yet to issue an official response to the petition. The unfolding dialogue between Zikites and hall administration is expected to shape the use and accessibility of these common rooms within the Hall.
