Miss Adelabu Sarah Abosede popularly known as Melanin of UI is our Village Beauty for this week. She is a 200 level student of the department of Communication and Language arts. In this exclusive chat with ZHPO correspondent, Emmanuel Adebiyi, she gives her take on Zik Hall and the University community as a whole.
MELANIN OF UI 🖤: My name is Adelabu Sarah Abosede popularly known as Melanin of UI.
ZIK PRESS: Sarah. Interesting. That is not a name people are as familiar with as Melanin of UI. Does you moniker have any history or reason you'd like to share.
MELANIN OF UI 🖤: I was nicknamed by my biology teacher in senior secondary school. He nicknamed me MELANIN the first time he saw me in the class because of my very dark complexion. And yeah, I loved the name too.
ZIK PRESS: A wholesome memory that is. Just go get to know you a little more. What are your hobbies outside academics and UI stress?
MELANIN OF UI 🖤: I love listening to music and taking my hustle seriously.
ZIK PRESS: Music is therapeutic, I agree. Which musician does it for you when it comes to music?
MELANIN OF UI 🖤: I don't have any musician in particular. I listen to music that soothes my hearing, but Afrobeat especially.
ZIK PRESS: Afrobeat has been gaining recognition globally in music in the past years, good choice. You spoke about taking your hustle seriously, do you have a particular one you're involved in?
MELANIN OF UI 🖤: Yes. I'm a model, a violinist and a campus influencer.
ZIK PRESS: That is absolutely impressive. Being able to excel in multiple areas is no small feat. Let's talk Zik hall. Do you have any assumptions or things you've heard about Zik hall before resuming in UI?
MELANIN OF UI 🖤: ZIK!!!! I was told ZIK hall is a jungle, and also that it has a very strong BROTHERHOOD bond.
ZIK PRESS: How about now? After a year in school, do you think they were right about Zik being a jungle and having a very strong brotherhood.
MELANIN OF UI 🖤: Yes! Talking about ZIK hall's infrastructure, it's really a jungle.😂😂 But ZIKITES are nothing short of amazing when it comes to supporting one another. The brotherhood bond is so STRONG!
ZIK PRESS: That's straight up honest. If you could advice Zikites, what do you think Zikites can do better at this session?
MELANIN OF UI 🖤: They should just do better in keeping their hall more tidy and maintaining a good hygiene in the hall.
ZIK PRESS: Thanks for that. To UI at large, University Of Ibadan is called first and best, if at all that was not one of the reason you chose UI at first. Has UI lived up to the first and best hype till now?
MELANIN OF UI 🖤: Yes.ðŸ˜ðŸ¤§ The stress is worth it.
ZIK PRESS: It surely does. As we wrap things up. A little drift in this question. What do you think on feminism in Nigeria and the world at large?
MELANIN OF UI 🖤: Feminism in Nigeria is misplaced. People have turned feminism to something else. The ultimate goal of feminism is to create a society where all individuals can enjoy equal rights, opportunities, and respect, regardless of gender.
Feminism has to do with fighting for gender equality, but most Nigerian feminist of nowadays are fighting for gender superiority. They view feminism as females being Superior to men which isn't supposed to be. Take the case of Saida Boj for example. She claims she's a feminist who fights for women. Sorry, but that's not feminism. Chimamanda Adichie is one true feminist I know and I am a feminist.
ZIK PRESS: It's really good that you know what you stand for as a feminist and not the tainted understanding people have. Thanks for your time. It's very well appreciated.
