To the average person, the Brain is just an organ for thinking and storing information; while this is correct, this is just a fraction of what the brain offers. The Brain is the most complex organ in the body. As the most complex organ in the human body and the central hub of the Nervous System, it governs not only cognition but also emotions, movements, and the regulation of essential bodily functions such as heartbeat and hormonal balance. As we celebrate Brain Health Month in June, it is important to learn how to maintain a healthy Brain, even as students. Maintaining a healthy Brain is an important goal in pursuing holistic health.
With rampant Brain disease, its prevalence underscores their significant impact in global health. According to the WHO, one in three people is affected by neurological conditions, and according to the Brain Health Atlas, more than 18% of all health loss around the world is associated with Brain conditions. Unfortunately, with these large numbers of people struggling with mental illness, stigmatisation and negative attitudes towards them are widespread, and it causes many people to suffer in silence.
This month of June, as we mark Brain Health Month, we are enjoined to stop the stigmatisation of people with Brain health conditions and take good care of our brains too. The Brain is more important than just memories; it controls all parts of the body and every facets of our being. WHO advocates several strategies to take care of your Brain health by avoiding Tobacco and Alcohol, eating a balanced diet—just as eating good has always proved to be important in all aspects of health—exercising daily—this doesn't have to be using the gym facilities every day; although it is good if you can, an early morning jog every day would suffice; practicing good sleep hygiene; and maintaining social connections. The university gives you the opportunity to maintain good relationships and keep your brain healthy. While some Brain diseases are hereditary, the majority of them are preventable with simple healthy habits.
