As contained in the official academic calendar, the new academic session officially commenced on Monday, 17th of June, 2024. Lectures are expected to begin on the aforementioned date, marking the official start of academic activities. With this, there is a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation among students and staff alike. The campus environment, which had been relatively quiet during the break, is now buzzing with activity as the holiday reaches its conclusion. Classrooms, offices, halls of residence and the popular hang-out spots are all becoming lively again.
The accommodation process for returning students is expected to also begin on Monday, and it is very advisable for returning students to resume as early as possible. This allows ample time to secure rooms and settle in before the academic activities begin in full swing. It is also essential for students to have all necessary documents ready, including receipts, school IDs, and any other required paperwork. Information on this will be communicated when available.
However, this year’s resumption is set against a backdrop of significant economic difficulties, the looming possibility of an indefinite industrial action, and the introduction of a new student loan scheme, all of which are shaping the experiences and expectations of most students; both new and returning. The cost of living has risen sharply, and this economic strain is felt acutely on campus, where students must manage tight budgets for accommodation, feeding, and other essentials.
Besides these economic challenges, there is the looming possibility of an industrial action by members of the labour union. This recurring issue is driven by grievances over salaries, working conditions, and funding for education. Amidst these challenges, the government’s introduction of a new student loan scheme offers a glimmer of hope for many.
The campus atmosphere, despite these challenges, remains vibrant and energetic as activities pick up. Clubs and societies are initiating their recruitment drives, orientation programs are underway, and various events are being organized to welcome students back. These activities provide valuable opportunities for students to engage in extracurricular activities, develop new skills, and build a sense of community.
