The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced its intention to participate in the impending nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The strike action which is scheduled to commence on September 6, 2023, is geared towards addressing critical problems that have surfaced in the country in recent times.
The NLC’s planned two-day warning strike action is centered upon several pressing issues, including the removal of fuel subsidies, the devaluation of the Nigerian Naira, and allegations of threats made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, concerning the demolition of properties of federal workers in the country’s capital.
President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osedeke, spoke of the union’s unwavering support for the NLC’s directive regarding the impending strike action.
“We are members of NLC affiliates, therefore if they declare a strike, our members will be part of it,” Osedeke told the press.
It is worthy of note that ASUU comprises a significant number of universities across Nigeria, totaling over 81 institutions, one of which includes the University of Ibadan. It remains to be seen if the school officials will adhere to this new directive and join in the solidarity strike, seeing that the school just resumed her new session in less than two weeks.
