Securing their place in the quarter-finals, Zik Hall emerged victorious over Queens Hall in both legs of the first round of Jaw War. In the highly anticipated first leg, Queens Hall faced off against Zik Hall to discuss the controversial topic “Corporal punishment should be banned among school-age children”. The topic of corporal punishment is a sensitive one that elicited strong arguments from both sides. While Queenites argued that physical punishment is an effective way to instill discipline, Zikites firmly believed that it is an outdated and cruel method that should be done away with entirely.
Bodunde Ebenezer well-known as Speaking Eben, one of Zik hall’s debaters, argued that while corporal punishment may seem effective in the short run, it can lead to lasting psychological damage for children, adding that “there are better ways to discipline children than through physical abuse.” Tijani, the second speaker for Zik Hall, continued the argument by pointing out the continued use of corporal punishment in some Nigerian schools despite being banned in other countries. He opined that “Nigeria must join the global community in prohibiting corporal punishment to ensure the safety and well-being of students.”
The second leg of the first round tackled the issue of online piracy in developing countries. Queens Hall argued for while Zik hall argued against the motion. In the first leg of the competition, Zik Hall scored 65% while Queens Hall trailed behind with 59%. The second leg saw Zik Hall’s representatives take the lead once again, with a score of 65.5% compared to Queens Hall’s 56.43%. The lump sum score for the two legs was Zik Hall at 65.25% and Queens Hall at 57.7%.
While Queenites muffled words and rattled jaws like the wheel of a moving train, Zik Hall representatives did not only converse eloquently, cognitively and convincingly but won without seeing Queenites as serious contenders, their arguments were well-oiled and delivered with confidence. Zikites also weighed in on Zik hall’s victory in the first round.Banting on twitter a Zikite teased, “The boasting Queenites later bowed to pay obeisance to the King of Baluba kingdom.”
Zikites, proudly sporting their hall crests, showed up in large numbers to support their representatives, SpeakingEben and Tijani, and to shower them with encomiums. The victory for Zik Hall was hard-earned and well-deserved and they’ll no doubt carry this momentum into the upcoming quarter-finals.
