Situation report on Haji’s A4 Constituency

By Thunder Balogun

The floor representative of the topmost floor in the Freshers’ block (A4) is Wasiu Ajibola popularly known as Haji. Some of his floor members were approached and interviewed on his activeness as the floor representative. This report details their comments including the response of the floor rep to some of the issues raised.

Is Haji really familiar with his floor members?

Some floor members said they know him very well because he relates well with them while some said they don’t really know him. A particular floor member said he prefered to relate with floor members living close to him rather than relating with everybody equally. Another floor member confirmed he hasn’t even seen him this semester. In response to this, Haji said” One thing is certain, I can’t see everything that is going on the floor, it is those I see that I will attend to and I don’t think it has ever happened that they brought complaints to me and I don’t attend to it ”. He also said “for the guy that said he hasn’t seen me this semester is “cap”, because even those that aren’t on my floor, I have been to their rooms for one or two reasons”.

The challenges of power supply

A4 constituency has experienced some challenges with power supply. The floor members however commended the floor rep on how he has handled the issue Nonetheless, there were still complaints from a particular room (A66) that hasn’t been illuminated since the beginning of the session. The occupants of the room said the room hasn’t been illuminated since the beginning of the session but there is power supply to their wall sockets to charge their appliances. The room occupants said they have made several complaints to the floor rep but nothing has been done till now. Haji told them it is a major fault which cannot be easily fixed. The room occupants also consulted an electrician that was fixing a general electrical fault on the floor and he also said the same thing. The floor rep responded by saying “when the fault happened, I attended to it and made complaints at the porters lodge and after that, the electrician came to attend to it but he attended to general faults because there was a time the whole floor didn’t have light and we all know how things work in UI, it is not possible for UI electricians to come and attend to a single room particularly and it is not as if light is not in their room, it is just that light is not reaching their lampholders but their sockets are working perfectly well ”.

FREQUENT BLOCKAGE OF THE URINARY DRAINAGE

The floor members also complained that the urinary drainage is frequently blocked leading to the accumulation of urine which does not bode well for the health of zikites living on the floor. The floor members hope the floor rep pays more attention to this. Haji responded by saying “the number of issues about the urinary drainage is that the path they made for it is too small so any little substance would block it easily. Secondly had it been our cleaners are effective, such won’t be happening but reverse is the case and most of them (floor members) are the ones pouring waste food to the pathway which is not meant to be. Personally, I had cleared the urinary drainage countless times and it is only when I see that I can do it. I seek for help for the cleaners.”

TORN WINDOW NETS

Some members also complained about their torn window nets which has exposed them to harsh weather conditions and harmful insects. There was a day a bee chased a particular resident of the floor out of his room due to torn window nets. He had to wait for some minutes before entering the room again. The floor rep responded that “All I did was to take notes of affected areas and after that, I went to Porters lodge to tell them all I saw.”
