Awaking from the reverie of an eventful weekend is perhaps one thing we would have to become accustomed to this second semester. The UCJ’s induction programme and FFA award, SHSN’s Black History Day celebration, the visit of celebrities like Brain Jotter and Layi Wasabi, and JCI’s Lanre Bello Inter-faculty Debate where Abodurin Ebenezer (Speaking Eben}, a notable Zikite, was first runner-up.
Closer home, the Baluba Lion’s win over Tedder hall’s football side in a friendly match on Saturday, in view of the forthcoming inter-hall football competition, and not to be forgotten the euphoric moment on Sunday evening, when Chelsea finally decided they’d had enough of Potter ball.
Amidst the festivities, it is noteworthy that Zik hall’s Executive Council is making strides in the hall’s administration. In the previous week, we’ve seen more activity from the office of the Vice-hall chairman, providing regular updates on the water situation in the hall, which is still concerning. Also, last Tuesday, the Executive Council announced the acquisition of a new projector and sound system. This particular news is the centerpiece of this editorial.
But this is not to only laud Team Collectivity’s achievement in solving an issue previous administrations have grappled with. It goes further to the ideal that connects us as Zikites. The acquisition of the new projector and sound system was according to the Executive Council sponsored by an alumnus of the hall, Mr. Idowu Bankole, who in a letter to Zikites expressed enthusiastically his love for the hall pivoted on our three-fold ideal of oneness, togetherness and brotherhood.
It is more than exemplary, even to the point of being astounding that a Zikite who has become an alumnus for about a decade is still in touch with the Zikism weal. An excerpt from the letter epitomizes this.
“Ever since our encounter with Zikism, our entire lives and existence have been dedicated to selfless service to humanity and we hope many would join us as we continue this journey which will only end when we get to the other Zik hall in heaven”
The italicized part of the excerpt brings to mind one of our chants, “do you know there is another Baluba in heaven…” Mr. Bankole’s undiminished love for this hall of residence says much about the ideal of Zikism we champion. Clearly, for past Zikites who established, proliferated and embodied this ideal, this wasn’t just a fanciful, casual, or pointless exercise of overly excited students. It was real!
For us present-day Zikites, this true love for the hall can be rebirthed and sustained. Today, sincere, true Zikism can surface in the responsibleness of our leaders, dedicatedness of our stakeholders and unity of all ZIkites to seeking after the good interest of the hall. Moreso, we can continue to uplift this venerated ideal in the competitions the hall is involved in; the forthcoming Jawwar public speaking competition, the inter-hall football competition, in our academics and in the continued selfless service of the hall to good causes.
If Mr. Bankole’s gesture is anything to go by, it is an example of what Zikites have been to the hall and even to the University as a whole and what it can be.
