Two weekends ago, Zik hall freshers, Legislative Council and Graduands suffer defeat at Maracana in football matches commemorating the Freshers’ orientation and the convocation.
Following the Freshers’ orientation programme organized by Zik Hall excos, football matches were held to commemorate the event. On the 12th of November, 2022, the executive and legislative council fought it out on Maracana in a novelty match. On the same day, Zik freshers attempted to prove their football mettle against the Baluba lions, Zik hall’s football team. Also, in the spirit of convocation, a stalite versus graduands match was held the following day.
EXECUTIVES VS LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
The first match kicked off at 7:30am between the legislative and the executive council. The match was really a tough one as both teams were evenly matched. At one point in the match, J Kareem, the sport minister, got an angular cross at a region few meters away from the opponent goal keeper. He got the ball behind the net after building a good connection with it, putting the excos team in the lead.
The legislative council got a chance later but wasted it. Honorable Habeeb also known as Idowest recreated another vain attempt very similar to the classic missed chance of Yakubu Ayegbeni, a Nigerian striker, who still found a challenge with facing an empty net against South Korea at the 2010 FIFA world cup.
When it was supposed that both sides would toughen it out to the end, the match took an interesting turn when Otumala Emmanuel, Zik Hall’s AG, who couldn’t make a difference with his yam legs was already gasping for breath after barely five minutes of coming on. His relief came when he was subbed off.
The Information and Propaganda Minister (Yamburger) who couldn’t make the squad for the executive council team, saw a fitting role as coach for the excos. Later in the match, Morriz, the Hall Chairman drove the ball from the back, moving the ball between the opponent players and creating a space for himself, fired the ball hard towards the goal post of the opponent team. The keeper couldn’t stop a second goal to the exco team.
The social and finance ministers were the two goal keepers of the match. The Vice-Hall Chairman, Ife Black and the Defence Minister, CK, came in as a subs. The match ended two goals to nil in favour of the executive council team.
FRESHERS VS BALUBA LIONS
The Ziklets (freshers) got a thorough thrashing from the Baluba Lions by 6 goals to nill. The match started few minutes after the match between the Excos and the legislative arm ended. Akunwa got a brace as he preyed on the inexperience of the Ziklets, he was a constant threat to the opposition team and remained unstoppable. Other goal scorers in the game were Dotun, Tomide and Afo.
The coach of the Ziklets team, Emma complained that two of his key players were absent which is the reason why they couldn’t win. At the end, the defeat of the Freshers was certain as the ref called the game off. The match was played on 12th of November, 2022. Baluba Lions had won the last inter-hall competition which held late last early, defeating Bello hall in the finals.
GRADUANDS VS STALITES
Just before the university community got engulfed in the convocation rave, Zik Hall graduands clashed with the stalites on Sunday. Among others, the graduands fielded Kester, who coached the Baluba Lions to victory last year, Skinny and DY. On the stalites side, the formidable school team trio of Afo, J Kareem and Bamiwo took the spotlight. By the time the first half was over, the stalites were convincingly the better side with a 3-1 scoreline in their favour.
In the second half, Skinny was able to harness his renown adroitness with the ball to pull one back for the graduands. In reply, the stalites widened their goal tally to 5 while their opponent got one more goal. The match ended at 5-3 to the stalites. This was after a substantially elongated injury time by Maniggy, the officiating refree, who was not only enjoying the role, but knew well to give enough time for the spectators to relish every possible minute of the thrilling game.
