Ife Black, Zik Hall’s Vice-hall Chairman, Discusses Plans for the Hall
10 months ago, on the 25th of January 2022, ‘Team Collectivity’, the incumbent student executive council in Zik hall stepped into office. Unfortunately, the latest ASUU strike forced the executive council to shelf its plans for the tenure and count days into weeks and eventually months before they could resume administrative activities again. After the 8-month-long hiatus, the executive council has without hesitation swung into action.
A few days before the opening of the halls of residence, the executive council with a number of Zikites took up the duty of preparing the hall for resumption. Some of the preparatory tasks included, the replanting of beautifying plants around the hall, filling of potholes on roads within the hall and those leading into the hall, replacing faulty bulbs on the corridors – ‘project light up the hall’, removing felled timber in A block, and a tank-washing exercise.
The Zik Hall Legislative Council (ZHLC) also saw it fit to publish a photo album of members of the council to keep Zikites aware of the identity of their floor representatives. Although, it is suggested that the album could have included their contacts as well for more accessibility.
Sequel to this, ZHPO met with the Vice-hall chairman, ….popularly known as a Ife black, who discussed some of the plans of his office for Zik hall. Among his plans, he disclosed that the beautification of Zik hall is a priority, as a ploy to boost the hall’s reputation. Thus, he intends to plant flowers in the flower vases around the hall.
He further indicated that his office plans to write to the department of Forestry to get beautifying plants for the project. He however admits that a clean Zik hall environment is germane to its beauty, and bemoans the untraceable disappearance of waste bins purchased by previous administrations.
Ife black also adumbrated on the need for a seamless process of obtaining complaints and requests from Zikites. Acknowledging that there are existing platforms to get Zikites’ views and complaints in form of dedicated WhatsApp groups, the Vice-hall chairman noted the fact that credible complaints and issues that are raised can be easily covered up by other discussions and thus fail to get the necessary attention.
He therefore disclosed the proposition of a ‘Zik Hall Help Desk’ through the use of Google forms where Zikites can relay complaints and pressing issues directly to the appropriate quarters. This will also involve the collaboration of the Legislative Council through the floor representatives, given their proximity to floor members.
Finally, Ife black, spoke on the introduction of an initiative that will foster the procurement of solutions to emerging challenges within the hall. This initiative which he referred to as Solve A Problem at a Time (SAPT for short), will be made up of a team that will recognize core problems in the hall and evolve solutions to them. For instance, he pointed out the inadequacy of cloth lines in the hall, which has resulted in Zikites spreading their clothes on grasses, especially in A block. Speaking on the funding for the SAPT project, Ife black stated that to supplement the soon-to-be-approved budget for his office he is looking towards the financial participation of Zikites.
